The Sun Came With Sissel

With the festivals and Nattjazz comes the beautiful weather, is what they usually say in Bergen. But not this year. Not until Sissel Kyrkjebø and Diana Krall came. Tonight they're holding a concert together, Norway's musical first lady and one of the world's best-selling jazz artists.

HAPPY IN THE SUNSHINE: Diana Krall has a little case of the flu, and isn't going outdoors. Sissel, on the other hand, praises the sunshine in Bergen. "I've been her for two hours, and it hasn't rained, yet!"

Kyrkjebø and Krall chatted on the way like two old friends when they met the press at Verftet yesterday. But tonight's concert is the first time they've worked together.

"I was introduced to Diana's music through a friend when I was in the USA two years ago. I'd never heard of her before, but I bought two albums and I liked them so much I played them the entire time," said Sissel.

Sissel has taken a tiny little break from her album recording to do tonight's concert.

"I've never sung jazz before, nothing other than at home, so for me it's just a tangent. But a great opportunity," she said.

Summer job
When Norwegians receive a visit from other lands, we always ask our guests how they like Norway. Diana Krall thinks Bergen is a really fine city.

"But I've only been here for two hours so far," she adds.

"And it hasn't even rained, yet!" Sissel comments.

But Krall has been in Norway before. A long, long time ago she had a summer job as a pianist in the bar at the Sheraton Hotel outside Oslo in Sandvika.

"They were a little bit upset at me, because I only played jazz," she remembered.

At the concert tonight, the ladies will peform one part together and then each have a solo performance.

"We'll sing the classics, such as "Dream A Little Dream" and "Everytime We Say Goodbye," said Krall.

"And 'My Heart Belongs to Daddy.' That will be fun," added Sissel.

Grammy-winner
Canadian Diana has played piano since she was four, and jazz since she was 10. Nat King Cole is her biggest musical idol.

"But I'm also inspired by artists such as Dinah Washington, Roberta Flack and Carmen McRae," said Krall.

Krall's last album "When I Look In Your Eyes" is the first jazz album in 20 years to be nominated for a Best Album Grammy.

"It was a wonderful experience to hear Bob Dylan say my name in the same breath as Santana's," said Krall, laughing.

Edvard and Ella
Santana, of course, took home the most prizes during this year's Grammy Awards, but Krall received the statue for the year's best jazz vocalist.

In her solo part of the concert Sissel will sing, among others, "Spring" by Edvard Grieg and "Prince Igor."

- And who are your role models within jazz, Sissel?

"Yes, well, that would be the old greats such as Billie and Ella," said Sissel pointing out to the shining Pudde fjord:

"It's so wonderful to be home in Bergen, even though I was just here to celebrate the 17th of May. It is always special to perform for the people of Bergen," said Sissel.
